Banksy Posters can lead the way to hidden art treasures

Fans of Banksy Graffiti that want to see his new works have to be quick off the mark.
Often within hours a new piece of Banksy Art is either defaced, covered in Plexiglas or the walls themselves removed.
The anonymous artists work is now so valuable that people resort to all sorts of desperate measures to claim it as their own and in most cases place it on various online auctions at highly extortionate prices.

The best way to see new pieces is to keep an eye on the Banksy Graffiti forums. Here you can get the most up-to-date information, although most Banksy Posters are often reluctant to give the precise locations of new works through fear that the art will be defaced, damaged or stolen.
Indeed the recent Banksy Graffiti in New Orleans was barely dry before it was either prised up or painted over and in London earlier this year several pieces of Banksy Art were destroyed, it seems his public works are fast becoming an endangered species.
For those who are not able to view his public works, luckily some of the best pieces have been preserved as Banksy Posters and Prints.
Perhaps by its very definition, graffiti is of temporal nature and therefore destined to live a shorter life than most.

Concerning the Mindless Destruction Of Banksy Pieces in Bristol

Banksy Prints – The Sole Remains?

The last year has seen three major Banksy Graffiti pieces destroyed in what appears to be attacks by people who seem jealous of his creativity and certainly lacking the talent to produce their own works.

Soon, it would seem, the only way to see Banksy Art will be by buying Banksy Prints, as more and more of his works are vandalized.

One group have made it clear that they want to destroy his much-loved works in Bristol (the anonymous artists’ Home Town).
Are we likely to see any existing Banksy pieces in another year?

Three of the major Banksy Graffiti murals affected are:

Banksy Little Diver

This piece known as the “Little Diver” which was painted on the walls of an alleyway in Melbourne, Australia had been under the protection of acrylic glass, but it provided little protection when the piece was vandalized last year, destroying not only a hugely popular work of street art, but one which had been valued at being worth over $400k.

Banksy’s Chalk Farm Maid

Last year, one of Banksy’s most iconic pieces “The Chalk Farm Maid” was obliterated by whitewash.
Most people conclude that it was that the destruction was the “work” of a rival Graffiti Artist and the message “All the best – Vida” was left behind in red paint.

Perhaps if the vandal had of left an image which was as brilliantly executed as the Chalk Farm Maid, people wouldn’t have been so devastated by its loss.

Sadly, all that was left was a wash of white paint and a poorly scrawled message.

Banksy’s “Mild, Mild West”

A group calling themselves “Appropriate Media” has recently claimed responsibility for spattering this piece, depicting a Teddy Bear about to throw a Molotov cocktail at advancing Riot Police, with red paint.

The Group state that they are opposed to the popularity of Banksy Graffiti with Hollywood movies stars and how his artwork is bringing about gentrification in working class areas.

As with the Chalk Farm Maid, this group do not seem to have an ounce of Banksy’s wit or talent and instead of making their point with a clever piece of street art, they merely threw red paint over Banksy’s artwork.

It’s sad that people are trying to destroy these works of art which have added such valuable and poignant commentary to the urban landscape and worse still – they’re replacing them with nothing more than whitewash and emptiness.

Thankfully, it’s easy to secure Banksy Prints and Posters and books containing his artwork – but if you can go and see his pieces, before they are removed by bungling Council Officials or jealous, childish attacks, then you would be wise to catch them while you can!

The Invisible Banksy

I just found a fantastic article for fans of Banksy Graffiti on Blek Le Rat, the French Artist who Banksy cited as being one of his biggest influences.
Blek Le Rat is such an influence on Banksy Art, that the anonymous artist was quoted as saying “Every time I think I’ve painted something slightly original, I find out that Blek le Rat has done it as well. Only twenty years earlier.”
Better yet, the French Artist is displaying new works which includes a piece called “The Invisible Man”, a tribute to Banksy and a stunning piece of work.
Here at Banksy Posters, we’re currently wishing we were Parisians so we would have the oppertunity to see this amazing artwork!

Laughing all the way to the Banksy

A lady in Melbourne is thanking her great taste and good fortune, after buying the classic Banksy Chimp with sign “Laugh now but one day we’ll be in charge” stencil.
The canvas was bought for $1000 back in 2002 and has just been sold for $180K at Bonham’s Urban Art Auction.
The lucky (former) owner of the Banksy Art, who prefers to remain anonymous, worked in London for seven years and would regularly see his works from the tube train on her way to work.
She visited Banksy’s studio and bought the Chimp canvas from Banksy’s Manager, one of two left from a series of five works.
Here at Banksy Posters, we’re priming our time travel machine and preparing to go back and snap up the remaining canvas, see you soon!

Banksy leaves New York!

With his Village Pet Store closed at the end of October, it seems Banksy is slowly leaving New York!
The huge Banksy Graffiti of the Rat with the Umbrella and the slogan “Let them eat crack” has sadly been partially whitewashed over.
It seems that Banksy’s rental of the wall space was decidedly short-term at only a month!

Denial of the Gray Ghost!

In New Orleans, Fred Radtke has been at war with Graffiti Artists for over Ten Years.
Thanks to his “Operation Clean Sweep”, a non-profitable organisation, thousands of tags and images have been destroyed, blocked out by gray acrylic primer.
Rather than paint the walls, Mr Radtke and his team simply blot out the offending tags or murals, leaving gray blobs, earning himself the title of “The Gray Ghost”.
New Orleans was the site for a wealth of new works of Banksy Art this Summer, but sadly, most of these images have since been defaced or removed.
Mr Radtke has denied that he is responsible for buffing the Banksy Graffiti, but images have been obtained that are said to show the Gray Ghost at work on Banksy mural on St. Claude Avenue, an image of a child with a refrigerator for a kite.
Mr Radtke refuses to comment, asides from stating that Artists must go through a “Mural Review Board”, something Banksy apparently forgot to do.
Thankfully there are plenty of pictures of the amazing pieces of work, made in New Orleans this year and an array of Banksy Posters and Prints, mercifully free of uniform blobs of gray!

Banksy Copycat strikes in the Highlands.

I just read an interesting article (link below).
It appears that someone is daubing the Scottish Highlands with slogans and murals that are very similar to Banksy Graffiti.
I’ll be scouring the Forums to see what other Banksy Posters have to say; in the small chance that it might now be an imitator but the great Artist himself!

Banksy versus the Grey Ghosts of London

Banksy has recently reacted to London’s Westminster Council and its attempts to remove the classic Banksy Graffiti piece “One nation under CCTV”.
The Council believes the artwork should be removed on the grounds that it’s an unlicensed commercial.
This in turn has produced a brilliant quote from Banksy:
“I was offended when Westminster said my painting was an advertisement. Advertising makes people feel inadequate and worthless. Graffiti doesn’t do that. Graffiti doesn’t emotionally blackmail you, graffiti doesn’t make you feel fat and graffiti doesn’t make you rush out and buy things, except maybe high strength cleaning products.”
The owner of the building is happy to keep the Banksy Art and so now the council have resorted to consulting local residents, hoping that they will agree that the graffiti has a detrimental effect on the area.
Here at Banksy Posters, we’re crossing our fingers and toes that this amazing piece of Art will be allowed to stay where it belongs, but reserving one finger to turn up at the grey ghosts at Westminster Council!

Banksy’s One Million Pound Pub!

A derelict pub in Liverpool has become the centre of a bidding frenzy, thanks to the huge mural of Banksy Graffiti, which adorns the side of the building.
The Banksy piece shows a Giant Rat toting a machine gun and the anonymous artist completed the artwork back in 2004 and it has since become the subject of many Banksy Posters and prints.
The Whitehouse Pub is currently listed for £495K but experts believe that the gun-happy Rat, the biggest Banksy mural in Britain, might be worth as much a million pounds!

Cream of Banksy Value Soup

Perhaps times are hard, but this did not stop a bidder at the Bonham’s sale in London from buying the Banksy Oil Canvas “Tesco Value Tomato Soup”, for $193K.
The piece had originally been estimated to sell for $131K, so a nice mark up for the owner!
The canvas is a pastiche of Warhol “Campbell Soup” and a firm favourite here at Banksy Posters.
Nearly a third of other works at the art sale failed to sell, although other Banksy Graffiti sold, proving that the anonymous artist’s works are as popular as ever.

Is Banksy Art proof of Dumbing Down?

If we need more evidence that the world is dumbing down, after the pick of Sarah Palin for Vice President, then perhaps the recent poll, which showed more people recognise Banksy’s iconic Kate Moss Andy Warhol tribute than Da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, is further evidence.
The set of six silk-screen prints of Kate Moss, a favourite at Banksy Posters, set a record in 2006 when they sold for $100K, the highest amount received at an auction at the time.
Perhaps this poll is evidence of dumbing down, or maybe people are more familiar with a modern painting of a supermodel who gets a slightly more of the media spotlight than an ambiguous sitter in a 16th century oil painting!

Banksy rising over New York?

It’s a shame that you can’t really see the mural, let alone Banksy himself, so we can find out if this really is Banksy caught in the act!

Times up for Banksy Piece in London?

Stalwart officiates and jobsworth’s at Westminster Council in London have sadly turned their attentions to one of the finest pieces of Banksy Graffiti he painted this year.
The piece, “One Nation under CCTV”, an obvious comment on the disquieting fact that Great Britain is currently the most watched society on earth, went up in April this year.
The work features a child on a ladder painting “One nation under CCTV” whilst a security guard with a guard dog photographs the juvenile artist. Comically, to the right of the piece is an actual CCTV camera.
Now Council Planners have deemed the piece an eyesore and have decided that it will only encourage other graffiti artists and “vandals” to spray their works across London. It seems these bright sparks believe that if you take down one piece of Banksy Art, it will dissuade all other Graffiti Artists!
For anyone who wishes to go and visit the artwork before the gray ghosts of London get their way, it’s at Newman Street near Oxford Circus.
For everyone else, the classic piece is bound to appear on numerous Banksy Posters and Prints, as it really is one of Banksy’s most impressive pieces.

Educating Banksy

When Talia Findlay’s Father bought her a painting for her birthday, it cost him the princely sum of $500 and since then its worth has rocketed to a potential $120K – not a bad return!
The painting was a piece of Banksy Art (Monkey Detonator) and when Talia’s Father purchased it he had no idea of its worth or how much it would fetch eight years later.
The painting was featured in the third exhibition by Banksy, long before the anonymous artist rose to his current heights of fame – way before his works were featured in Art Galleries and tacked up as Banksy Posters in Student Dorms.
Until recently, the painting hung on Mrs Findlay’s wall but now its found its way into an auction house and is expected to fetch anywhere between $80-120K when its featured in an Urban Art Sale due to take place on the 14th October.
Mrs Findlay entered the piece to see what it would fetch and was shocked and surprised to learn of the pieces value and is putting the money from the Auction to go towards the education of her two young sons.

How to find Banksy Graffiti in London

I just found a brief piece which included an interview with Martin Bull, author of the snappily titled “Banksy Locations and Tours: A Collection of Graffiti Locations and Photographs in London”.
Mr Bull has been conducting free tours of Banksy Graffiti in London and from these walks, he put together a book which shows locations of Banksy Art with maps and for the more technolgically minded – GPS references.
For visitors to London who wish to see Banksy’s work for themselves, the book is an invaluable guide and a percentage of sales going to the Big Issue (a charity for the homeless).
The book is now in its third edition, as Banksy’s works are added and sadly buffed and stolen but the author keeps up to date via Banksy Posters on forums on the Internet and social sites where people upload new works all the time.

The Village Pet Store and Charcoal Grill. From Banksy: New Yorkers dont care about art, they care about pets. So Im exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing. I took all the money I made exploiting an animal in my last show and used it to fund a new show about the exploitation of animals. If its art and you can see it from the street, I guess it could still be considered street art.”

The Mystery and Mystique of Banksy

I just found a great piece in the “News.Scotsman” (of all places!) about Banksy.
It’s a worthwhile read for all fans of Banksy Graffiti and charts his rise from spray-painting trains to placing his works of art in National Galleries.
There is of speculation as to his real identity, as has been speculated by plenty of Banksy Posters on forums and the strange fact that the last “outing” by the Daily Mail was for someone whose death certificate may or may not have appeared.
All in all, an interesting article for anyone fascinated by the mysterious Banksy!

Banksy’s Big Apple Pet Store

Fans of Banksy Graffiti might not be wholly surprised to hear that he has used Animatronics in his latest work – a Pet Shop full of bizarre and outlandish creatures.
Back in 2005 in Westbourne Grove, London, Banksy filled a Shop with Art and live rats and you had to sign a disclaimer before entering to ensure you knew what might happen by way of rat! People were only let in four at a time to avoid harming the rodents and it must have been pretty strange to be viewing one of his oil paintings as a rat scurried up your leg.
At the new Pet Shop, where a rabbit applies cosmetics as chicken nuggets lap up sauces, the Pet Shop “Owner” is an actor and none of the exhibits are for sale.
Banksy explained, “New Yorkers don’t care about art, they care about pets. So I’m exhibiting them instead. I wanted to make art that questioned our relationship with animals and the ethics and sustainability of factory farming, but it ended up as chicken nuggets singing. I took all the money I made exploiting an animal in my last show and used it to fund a new show about the exploitation of animals. If it’s art and you can see it from the street, I guess it could still be considered street art.”
The Exhibition is not such a great surprise to Banksy Posters on forums, as it has been widely discussed for some time that Banksy was about to do something big and the appearance of the Giant Rat Murals was an exciting teaser to this fascinating store.

Hooded Banksy turns out to be, not hooded Banksy!

After speculation that a photographer had caught the elusive Banksy on camera, it turns out that the picture of the hooded man spotted overseeing the latest Banksy Graffiti Mural in New York on Wednesday, was not the secretive artist.
This is good to know as given he is anonymous – standing around under a giant rat and giving directions to the painters would not be the best way to preserve anonymity and Banksy has always struck me as being a shrewd man!
The photograph which showed a hooded man with a beard and jet-black sunglasses directing one of the workers from Colossal Media as they painted the latest New York Rat, turns out to be R. Nicholas Kuszyk, a Brooklyn based artist who is informally affiliated with both Colossal Media and Banksy and was photographed overseeing the two most recent murals, on behalf of Banksy.
Mr Kuszyk’s Artistic theme revolves around robots, rather than rats and is well worth a look.

Banksy Hits New York (part three & four)

Two more giant Banksy Murals are appearing tonight in New York.
The one on the corner of Houston and Macdougal is an advertisement for a new exhibition of Banksy Art.
Banksy’s own website has a link for the new show which will be in New York City at “89 Seventh Avenue South (Between West 4th and Bleeker). Open 10am – 12pm daily until October 31st (also viewable at night).”
Accompanying the advertisement are four Youtube clips of animatronics, one of a rabbit applying cosmetics, two “fish sticks” swimming in a goldfish bowl and processed meats (hotdogs, sausages, salami and bologna) exhibited in reptile tanks. The following statement regarding the billboards came from Banksy’s Team:

“I wanted to play the corporations at their own game, at the same scale and in the same locations. The advantage of billboard companies is that they’ll let you write anything for money, even if what you write is questioning the ethics of letting someone write anything because they have money.”

There are also unconfirmed reports from Banksy Posters of a photograph showing Banksy himself directing one of the murals and although the picture doesn’t seem to resemble the recent Banksy photographs circulating the Internet, you never know…

Banksy with house attached

I just read an interesting article on the BBC about house selling in the current financial climate and novel ideas to get your home sold.
One House owner added $40k to the value of their property due to the 25ft mural of Banksy Art on the side of their five-bedroomed home in Bristol, Devon.
However the homeowners soon became disturbed to hear that prospective buyers planned to have the mural removed as soon as the sale went through and so they looked to a local art gallery to sell the Banksy Graffiti with the house thrown in as part of the deal.
The Banksy Graffiti was of particular value as it was one of the last pieces which he “free-painted” before moving on to stencils in order to get his work done quickly enough to hopefully avoid the police.
Sadly, vandals destroyed the mural by throwing red paint over the Banksy Art and the Artwork with house attached wasn’t sold.
My property is up for sale but I don’t think I will get away with giant Banksy Posters plastered on the side of my Studio Apartment as a selling point – but anything is worth a go!

Neglected Banksy worth $60k found on a Duck Shed!

A Farmer in Leeds (North England) has been living with a piece of Banksy Art on his walls since 2003 and was completely unaware of the Artist of the worth of the graffiti.
The piece, a television being thrown from a window, has been seen on countless Banksy Posters and prints and also appears on a wall in Shoreditch (London).
Banksy recreated his stencil on the Farmers wall for a photoshoot with the band Blur (who he also collaborated with on singles and an album cover) and since then, the Farmer forgot all about it and it was left to face the elements until five years later when a friend of the families who is an Auctioneer realised the value of the Artwork and persuaded the family to sell.
The Farmer used a stone saw to cut the Banksy Art from his wall and it fetched just over $66K, not bad for a forgotten stencil on a duck shed!

Banksy and his Damn Rats

The recent pieces of Banksy Art in New York this week have caused quite a stir.
The first mural was a sketch of a rat drawing on the wall and the sketchiness was presumably intentional as the people who actually painted the piece were from Colossal Media a professional outdoor media company.
This appears to be a new tactic for Banksy and one which is proving to be unpopular with some Banksy Posters on the various Internet forums, although how any Artist (who is supposed to be anonymous and is probably wanted by the Police on the technicalities of being a vandal) is supposed to negotiate the logistics of painting giant murals in the middle of New York on their own is questionable.
Then a second mural followed, a giant rat with an umbrella significant of the coming financial storm, the sharp tie of the Wall Street worker, blood on its hands as it clutches a briefcase leaking money as it scurries away from the financial turbulence its brought about.
The second Rat has already been targeted by a local graffiti Artist, who has sprayed “Damn Rats” below it, perhaps a comment aimed at Banksy, who some feel has become commercialised.
The scale of Banksy Graffiti and the sale of his works may well have broken away from the underground, but I don’t feel that this should cause resentment; at the end of the day he is bringing the spotlight to the fact that graffiti is a valid art form.
And who else is reminding us of the woeful response of the Bush Administration to Hurricane Katrina and just in time for an election that may well bring Bush Mark Two to the presidency?

New Banksy Rat appearing in New York?

News of a fresh mural of a Giant Rat in New York is appearing on various forums on the Internet as Banksy Posters speculate whether this latest piece is Banksy Graffiti or not.
The Giant Rat is one of two murals to appear in NYC (the latest is literally going up right now!) over the last week.
There is some doubt as to Artist behind the rats, however they resemble Banksy’s style and as for subject matter, rats have figured in his work for a long time, indeed they are virtually his trademark.
There is also the fact that the Art Dealer who represents Banksy has recently opened a pop-up gallery in NYC for ‘The Outsiders’ exhibition. Whilst it has been stated that no Banksy work will appear in the exhibition it may well be appearing outside!

Times up for Banksy’s Little Diver?

With the wholesale destruction and selling of Banksy’s recent pieces in New Orleans, its sad to see that now his work, and the work of other talented Graffiti Artists, is coming under threat by Australia’s Premier, John Brumby.
It seems the Politician has turned his sights to the Street Art of Melbourne’s Lanes, condemning it as being a “blight on the City”.
The Banksy Graffiti piece “Little Diver”, a favourite with Banksy Posters, is on a nearby wall and has been covered with Perspex to protect it by the Melbourne City Council.
Hopefully, despite the comments of Mr Brumby, it will remain protected and available for everyone to see.
Banksy referred to Melbourne’s Street Art as the nations most significant contribution to the arts since the Aborigines had their pencils stolen! Certainly it has become a hotspot for tourists, although it appears that Mr Brumby believes that the main draw for visitors is the “little restaurants, its the flower pots, window pots and all of those things.”
Surely both can coexist?
How can Street Art in alleyways affect the more traditional tourists?
It seems doubtful to me that many people would travel to Melbourne to view its alleyways (asides from Art Fans!).

Revenge of Banksy or the Economic Downturn?

The Modern Art Auction held in London this weekend, which featured five pieces of Banksy Graffiti, failed to sell the intended lots.

There was controversy before the Auction even began when it emerged that “Pest Control” the organisation set up by Banksy, refused to authenticate the art works.

Although there was no denial that the Banksy Graffiti was genuine, the lack of endorsement seems to have had a negative impact on the sale, where just one of the pieces, Fungle Junk, was expected to sell for $300K. Banksy’s refusal to authenticate the works was due to his dislike of the Street pieces being removed from their intended environs. A few Banksy Prints were sold and a self portrait of Kate Moss fetched less than the asking price of $80k.

Lyon and Turnbull, the Auctioneers have blamed the Economic downturn, rather than Banksy’s lack of endorsement.

Perhaps there will be some bargain Banksy Posters appearing on Ebay in the near future!

Banksy in New York?

Steve Lazarides, the art dealer who represents Banksy, is opening a pop-up gallery in New York and recently, some strangely familiar pieces of art have been springing up in the vicinity of the gallery.
The show that is to be held is called “The Outsiders” and will only run for two weeks and features pieces by a host of artists and even includes a portrait of Dubya Bush formed of pornographic material.
Sadly, there will be no Banksy Graffiti at the show and Mr Lazarides has denied that the infamous Artist will show.
However, in the last week, street art has appeared and Banksy Posters on forums are speculating whether the elusive artist has in fact created these works.
One piece of art shows Barack Obama as Superman standing proudly before the American Flag. The style of the piece is not a million miles away from Banksy Art.
Furthermore, other images are appearing in the neighbourhood and contain doctored images of celebrities, included one of Marilyn Monroe with the face of Britney Spears. If this isn’t Banksy, then it is someone very familiar with his work.
Could these new pieces be secret Banksy Art?

Authentic Banksy’s?

The fate of five pieces of “Banksy art”, valued at up to $550K is in doubt as the anonymous Street Artist refuses to authenticate them.
The five works of Banksy Graffiti, including “Refuse Rat” and “Fungle Junk” are to be auctioned without the Artists official endorsement but the Auctioneers insist the works are authentic.
A group called “Pest Control” was set up earlier this year and officially endorsed by Banksy in order to authenticate Banksy Art after a series of fake canvasses went to market.
Usually any new Banksy Graffiti appears on the artist’s official site, or is authenticated and posted by Banksy Posters on numerous online forums.
Pest Control are not disputing the Banksy Art featured in the auction, but neither will they authenticate it.
It seems the real problem is not the validity of the pieces, but Banksy’s dislike of his art being taken from where it belongs, on the street.

The great Banksy raffle

For those seeking investments outside the financial institutions during these turbulent times, a gamble on Banksy Graffiti might well be a wise move.

On October 16th, an exhibition will be held in a disused factory in London and it will be attended by a very select crowd at $10K per ticket, slightly more expensive than the price of Banksy Posters…
Each ticket guarantees that you will walk away with a minor original work by one of the featured artists, in addition to this two winners of a raffle will walk away with a piece of Banksy Art.
One of the works is a sketch of the Banksy Graffiti that appeared earlier this year in London that showed three children pledging allegiance to a Tesco (the British version of Walmart) carrier bag on a flagpole.
The other artwork is a nineteenth century oil painting with a PC style “system error” obscuring it, valued at $600K.
As much as I’d love to attend the raffle, I think I’ll be saving my pennies and sticking with my Banksy Posters for now!
